Hello!

My sister had a mole removed by her GP yesterday who told her that he was worried about it because it was deeper than he had hoped and it extended to the muscle. What he removed has now been sent for examination and she will get the results next week.

Since she told me I have been doing some probably-ill-advised Googling and am worried by what I've found, i.e. that depth or thickness can indicate a later stage of cancer.

So, I have a couple of questions:
Is this what the doctor meant when he said that it extended to the muscle?
And, is this always a bad sign? Or is it possible that it might be nothing or benign??

I'm a bit clueless about all of this and would appreciate any helpful information.

Well, yes, depth/thickness is one of the prime factors in determining the stage of a cancerous mole.

BUT first it has to be determined if the mole is cancerous or not. It could very well just be a very deep benign lesion.

Google is indeeed a bad thing sometimes eh? I too found that out the hard way LOL

Hi Kaelie,

Thanks for taking the time to reply; it's much appreciated.

Basically, from all my Googling (!), I wasn't sure if there was such a thing as a deep benign lesion. I'm glad to hear that this is not necessarily the absolute worst case scenario that I was imagining!

Yep, I'm jumping ahead of myself and just need to wait for the results.

Hello again.

I just wanted to let you know that my sister has just returned from the doctor with what appears to be good news. What they removed was indeed something sinister (cancer/pre-cancer??) but, from the preliminary report, it would appear that he managed to remove it all in time last week. She will have to wait till next Monday for her full report, but her doc said that he was pretty confident that it hasn't spread.

So I just wanted to let you know and thank you again for providing a much-needed ear last week!
