My husband has IIIC Colon Cancer(Sigmoid) and had surgery on 10/22/04. He is currently having his 2nd chem treatment. His pre-surgery CEA was 4.3 and CEA on 11/4 was 1.7.

I have read that in the initial staging they should check the liver function. What does that tell them?

I was looking at 2 of my husbands tests (after surgery & one after the 1st chemo) and they had changed and I was wondering if it means anything.

11/04/04 (1st Consultation w/oncologist)
Alk. Phosp 109
AST 53
ALT 170
T. Bilirubin 0.3
Total Protein 6.2
Albumin 3.0
Globulin 3.1
Calcium 9.2

11/29/04(1 Chemo)
Alk. Phosp 58
AST 20
ALT 32
T. Bilirubin 0.2
Total Protein 7.1
Albumin 3.8
Globulin 3.2
Calcium 9.3

My husband also had a PET scan on 11/18/03 and it showed SUV 4.7 for the left iliac node level with the 1st sacral vertebral body and distal to the aortic bifurcation. They said this could be cancer or post-operative inflammation. Nothing in the liver or lungs.

Thanks for all you do.

Hello

We usually check the liver function to see if patients are able to receive some forms of chemotherapy, as this can be toxic to the liver. So if you have liver problems prior to chemo, we need to either think about a different drug or reduce the doses. The second set of labs looks actually better than the first one. Doctors will follow it and make sure that his liver is tolerating the chemotherapy.

best regards,
Leo
