Hello,

Currently I am 21 weeks pregnant and have a swollen lymph node in my right armpit. My doctor has told me that it could be lymphoma, but wants to wait for 2 months to see if the lymph node gets larger. He will not order a biopsy. I told him I am uncomfortable with waiting 2 months, but he insists there is nothing that can be done for lymphoma while pregnant anyway. First of all, I am wondering if lymph nodes often swell during pregnancy and end up being non-cancerous. I am also wondering if there are treatment options for lymphoma during pregnancy. Of course I am cursed with an HMO until January, after which I will have access to more doctors with a PPO health plan. Is it safe to wait so long for a biopsy? Psychologically, I am not doing so well not knowing what is going on with my body. Thanks for listening.

Hello

Any treatment for lymphoma during pregnancy is contraindicated. Your lymph node in the axilla can be benign as well. Also, if you are not having symptoms such as fevers, night sweats, weight loss, it is less likely that it is lymphoma. During pregnancy it is extremely complicated to make decisions like that. Different doctors may have different opinions.

regards
Leo

Dear Kotikus,

I hope by now that you have had a happy, healthy, birth and that you anc your child are doing well. I also had swollen lymph nodes in the armpit during pregnancy - 23 yrs ago. I did not develop lymphoma, however, until this year. I would get your blood checked and just stay vigilant. Hope you are enjoying your little one..my graduated from Harvard 2 years ago is doing fine! All the best - Blue Eyes
