Surgical Pathology Report - Final Microscopic Diagnosis: Compound dysplastic/dermal blue nevus with hypercellularity and focal severe atypia of the intraepidermal component. Final Comment: "The lesion is definitely not malignant. It is not desmoplastic melanoma, but rather a combined nevus with blue nevus features. However, it does have a focally severely atypical intraepidermal component that extends to the margin. I would recommend a re-excision of the lesion with a 3mm to 5mm margin."

My understanding is that these dysplastic nevi, although not anything now, have been determined to be potential candidates to "turn into something" someday. It is also my understanding that it is not a given that these moles would automatically become melanoma someday (if left behind), just a possibility.

So I would say that your news was very good, and that the Dr. is now exhibiting preventative maintenance.

Hopefully, others with more medical knowledge (just about everybody) will weigh in on this opinion.
