My 3 1/2 year old son has what I thought was a "strawberry".

It developed from a red freckle to a growth in 3 weeks. Last night it started bleeding & I took him to our pediatrician who said it was a pyogenic granuloma that needed to be excised ASAP.

Can someone tell me if that is indeed what is going on & what it means? Is this possibly a cancer?

Well, the pictures look like a text-book case. To quote the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology:
Pyogenic granuloma is a relatively common skin growth. It is usually a small red, oozing and bleeding bump that looks like raw hamburger meat. It often seems to follows a minor injury and grows rapidly over a period of a few weeks to an average size of a half an inch. The head, neck, upper trunk and hands and feet are the most commonly sites.
I think the doctor wants to remove it ASAP to avoid a more painfull procedure later, not to mention disconfort and bleeding.

Some malign tumors can mimic a pyogenic granuloma, but they are not common. Donīt forget to ask for a histopathological examination, just to be on the safe side.
