My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. It has spread to his liver, nodes and lungs. Chemo and radiation are not an option. They did remove the hugh tumor in his kidney which I think they don't always do. He took nexavar for about a month. He had horrible side effects. He had the worst hand and foot rashes. Layers and Layers of skin just peeled away. He could barely use his hands and by the time it hit his feet the doctors took him off of it.
He then had some high calcium issues and had to spend a week in the hospital getting medicine to bring down the levels.
He qualified for a clinical study out of uw madison hospital in wisconsin. He has now taken his study drugs for over a month now and he has some hair loss, energy problems and blood pressure problems. He is still eating and has no rashes. He goes for his scans on sept. 11 and then we should know if the drugs are doing their jobs.
I think the nexavar intereferes with blood supply to the tumors. Good luck with you situation.

Thanks for your reply, and I am sorry to hear all that you husband has gone through. I will keep my fingers crossed for a positive outcome when he has his tests. My friend has started the nexavar and feels vey vey tired. I don't think he has had as many side effects as your husband has had. Let me know how his test go.

Thanks for the thoughts. My husband is only 52 and has never been sick. I am 46 and never in my wildest dreams did we think he was going to have cancer. He had been sick for a couple months with some stomach pain and it took awhile for the doctors to figure this out.
Some people on this particular drug have been alive over 3 years which is alot better odds then my husband was given. They said he had about a year. I guess this drug is very similar to nexavar as it interferes with blood supply to the tumors. I hope it works and my huband seems to be fighting. He hasn't lost his will to live yet, but our life has changed so dramatically. I wish your friend the best and hopefully he will beat the odds. God Bless!
