Hello Everyone,

In addition to English not being my native language, this is also my first post in CF forums, so please bear with me as I describe my father's case.

Three weeks ago, my dad (70) underwent surgery to remove a small tumor on the outside of his left lung. I am far away (U.S.) form his home and am trying to understand his condition because he doesn't like to talk about himself. After reading few articles on eMedicine.com, I came across a condition that sounds similar to what my father has explained to me. Since, NSCLC is the most common form of lung cancer and considering that my father doesn't (never) smoke, I assumed that we might be dealing with adenocarcinoma (he told me it was on the outside, and most peripheral tumors are adenocarcinomas).

He was released from the hospital a week after the surgery, which, according to him, went well, but was told that he would need 2 chemotherapy sessions.

It is hard for me to explain how I feel about his condition because I lost my mother 7 years ago due to a breast cancer. Although my dad is 70 years old, I just turned 25 and don't wish to go through a similar scenario.

I would like to know how serious my father's condition might be and whether chemotherapy is necessary for similar cases. I really appreciate your time and consideration.

Please let me know if I have to clarify or add any information.

Thanks.

ivanpj44,

I'm responding not b/c I know the answer you seek, but b/c I like to reply to people who have to wait a long time for replies. I am sorry for what you're going through. Not knowing is hard and can be more nerve wracking than just knowing what's going on and being able to cope.

I hope for you and your father's sake it is not in an advanced stage. From what you describe it sounds like it could be in an earlier stage but you didn't say if there were ct scans or mri's done. Do you know if it is just contained in that one area? I know you said your dad isn't telling you much, but if you can squeeze some info out of him you might be able to tell by the staging. Here's a link to one site that explains all that.
