I don't know about magic and I'm certainly not in a position to recommend any medical treatments- not being qualified to do so, but I do know there is value in every day. Sounds chocolate-boxy, I know.
My Dad too was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer with metastases to the liver in the week my son was born in June 2004. And if ever there was a question as to the value of each day, my son has shown me the answer. My Dad was originally given 3 months. By which time my baby, Luke would have only just been able to hold his head up; crawling was a long way off; he had never tasted a strawberry! My Dad has lived to hear Luke call him "Grampy" and to take orders from him. And Luke has educated him in the ways of the dinosaurs. Now that's what I call magic- Harry Shmarry!
Hang in there. My thoughts are with you.

Hi. I have a similar situation. I am a 39-year-old female, and I was diagnosed with stage IIIb colon cancer in Aug. 2005. I had surgery at that time, and was told they got it all. I started chemo in Sept. 2005, but only received four treatments, and my blood cell counts tanked and were unable to recover. I went for months with no treatment, getting all sorts of tests on my blood, searching for the problem.
I switched to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for further study and, strangely, the same week my blood cell counts miraculously rebounded, I started suffering from abdominal ascites that turned out to be malignant. Turns out my colon cancer spread to my liver and my ovaries. I had my ovaries removed in April 2006, and nothing was done to my liver so that I could get started on chemo right away.
As a prognosis, I was given two years, more or less.
I take chemo weekly, and my ascites is currently controlled, but I'm very curious about prognosis. I can't seem to find a lot of information about metastatic colon cancer. It's very irritating and frustrating.
I now have a second spot on my liver that they can't sem to pin down through CT and MRI, so I get a P.E.T. scan this Thursday, and I have my 8-week CT and chest x-ray this Friday.
Hopefully, I'll know more after this week. We'll see.
I've ben pretty lucky so far with a lack of side-effects, but my doctor says the longer I stay on the chemo, the more things will start popping up. My most bothersome side=efect has been break-outs and rash on my face from the Erbitux, and a nasty case of shingles on my neck. Not fun, but I can live with it. I've been able to work full-time, too, which helps me mentally.
Sorry... I guess this isn't very helpful to you, and doesn't answer your question in any way... I just felt compelled to respond since I understand how you must be feeling.
How are things going for you now? Have you learned anything new?
I hope all is well, and please e-mail me if you feel up to it.
(Tracy - I enjoyed reading your post about your dad. Very encouraging, and I hope he is continuing to do well!) |
