somehow i feel like i need to get all of my feelings out about this situation....

my mother has pancreatic cancer, the cancer spread to her stomach, gall bladder, bile duct, and fluid in her lungs, she also had jaundice, many other complicated factors also. they called it stage 4!

at first she thought the feeling in her stomach was indigestion, it was in the side of her stomach, and ache at the back, she left it for months, the white of her eye was dark yellow, her urine was brown, she was weak all the time. she went to the hospital and they kept her there for 3 weeks, they thought it was gall stones, they used the scope passing through the throat to determine this, and found they couldnt get it throught enough!, then the ct scan followed and they obviously knew what it was, they told our family nothing really, she was then tranferred to a bigger hospital, and another scope, and ct scan there determined she had this cancer.

whipples procedure was their best bet, they let us know that very rarely operating on this stage was dangerous, and ct scans never let them know really how bad it was inside. they operated taking away her gall bladder, taking away all of her pancreas, 3rd of her stomach, bilde ducts removed, and then they would deal with fluid in lungs.

she came out of it with 5 days in ITC (intensive care) and 2 more weeks in the hospital, she seemed ok after this, she is now on her 2 months of chemotherapy and over here in the UK its the same sort of chemo for breast cancer, shes weak, loosing her hair, and depressed alot of the time, they dont know if all of the cancer was defnitely removed they told us just take one day at a time! the cancer was over 3cm long, she estimated three years she had it.

i have this strong feeling that my mum wont be with our family for too long now, even though she has had this operation and it seemed to work out better than they hoped, every thursday i dread as its the day she gets her chemo, i cant imagine how she and many others feel......

A x

First of all, I am so sorry that your mom has been diagnosed with this type of cancer. Your mom has a tough fight infront of her and she'll need all of her family to give her strength.

Reading your post has brought back so much memories for me. After one weekend in September 2005, my mom said she must have overate because she was suffering from indigestion. My mom's pain was more on the upper abdomen area, and she also had a backache. She was diagnosed on September 21, 2005 with cancer in the pancreas, gallbladder and liver. She became jaundice one day after being admitted. It was inoperable, Stage IV. She underwent two doses of chemotherapy. She passed away on October 17, 2005.

Every person is different and just because my mom didn't make it through, doesn't mean yours won't either. Your mom survived the whipple procedure which is a major operation, so she is a fighter! Keep your spirits up, as well as hers.

I hope your prayers are heard and answered...take care.

I have pancreatic cancer, having been diagnosed two years ago. They performed a whipple procedure on me on Oct 21, 2004, and then I went through radiation treatment combined with chemo (Xeloda), then more chemo. The cancer seemed to go away for a while, then this spring returned as stage IV and they are fighting it with more chemo (Gemcitabine). My point is this. Two years later I am still here. The latest tests indicate that for the time being, we may be beating this moster.

So whatever you do, do not give up. Give her the best treatment you can, and pray for the best.
