My mom was just diagnosed with MM and is starting chemo tomorrow. They are using Velcade which I've read is a great new drug but I've only seen it used as a 2nd line drug. Does anyone have any experience with Velcade as their first treatment?

Hello,

Indeed, I believe that Velcade is now being used for MM in the first instance for those diagnosed with "aggressive" manifestations of the disease. (Staging is complicated in the case of MM, as some physicians have noted that the once universally accepted Salmon-Durie staging system is not always the best way to gauge the progression of illnesses such as MM).

My father was recently diagnosed with MM and has just received his first three dosages of Velcade plus Decadron following the typical "two-week treatment/one week rest" cycle. I'd be happy to continue a dialog with those who are following/monitoring the course of Velcade treatment in recently diagnosed family members. I'm curious as to whether or not side effects such as nausea are evident for individuals on Velcade?

Best wishes to all of you.

Thanks so much for the response. My mom had her 1st treatment on Friday and her second one yesterday so no side effects yet! She is receiving Velcade, Procrit and Zometa 2x a week and is taking Dex, Thalidamide and Fosamex orally. I'll let you know how it goes over the next few weeks. They have her on a high steriod dose daily, too (not quite sure why)
