Hi
I am 38 yo female. This past week I went to the ER becasue I was in a lot of pain. After Morphine and a Cat Scan, they sent me home telling me they think I passed a kidney stone. The next day the ER nurse called and said they found a 1 cm mass on my left kidney. Told me to follow up with my PCP. I went and saw her and after careful review of my Ct Scan, she said it was to hard to tell anything and that it is very small. Most likely a piece of spleen, a mar on Ct Scan..etc...told me to see Urologist. Urologist looked at Ct Scan and said the same thing, it didn't really even look like it may be attached to Kidney, it was about 1 cm, shaped like a very small grape, pointed on one end and rounded. Also said looks like a piece of spleen since it was so close to that area. Said he "Highly doubt it is anything in a 38 yo female" and recommended an IVP Cat Scan, and said "We shall see if it glows"...he claims worst case scenario they could just "Microwave it off" that even it was something I would not need any part of my kidney removed etc....Why would he think it is "doubtful that it is a cancerous tumor"?? My PCP said the same thing.
While at the ER I did have non-visible blood in my urine. I have had a dull ache in lower back for about three years now, but Urologist laughed and said that was just lower back pain and not at all where my kidney is. He does not even think I passed a stone that night int he ER.
He says not to worry, but how can I not be worried?? I saw the "mass" he was speaking of, and it IS possible to have a cancerous tumor at the age of 38, isn't it??

By a normal CT Scan, can they tell if it has spread to anywhere else if it WAS a cancerous tumor??? I know it is small, but I cannot help but be sick with worry. I cannot eat or sleep and my IVP Cat Scan is not until the 22nd... And what does it mean if it "glows"?? Is that good or bad???
What are the chances of recovery/survival in a small 1cm tumor ??

I have three children, and I am so scared I need to make long term plans for them.

Any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated...

I am not trying to scare you, I just want you to be well informed. You have the same symptoms that I went to see my doctor with, she thought I just had a really bad kidney infection at first then a week later the pain started, they thought I had a kidney stone, then the pain got so severe that I could not stand for even a minute that's when she sent me for a ct scan. I had stage 3 adult Wilms tumor, wilms tumor is a pediatric kidney cancer that is usually found before the age of 5. I would have never known a 2cm mass was found in my kidney 4 years before I was diagnosed until I decided in July of this year to get copies of all of my medical records from my doctors and the hospital that I was sent to. 8 years ago I was in an mva that sent me to the hospital with a broken leg and a cut on my scalp. After all of the cat scans and everything that they did they only told me about my leg, they did not tell me about the mass on my right kidney. I found out about the tumor 4 years after the mva in 2002 when I was told that I had kidney cancer at the age of 32.That er doctor will never know how he has changed my life because he decided to take my choices out of my hands concerning my medical care. That kidney was destroyed before I could have anything done about it, all the surgeon could do is go in and take what tissue was left out with the tumor. If all you do is make certain to have tests run at the least every 6 months to a year, please do to make certain there has been no change in size or shape. Concerning prognosis it depends on what type of cancer( if it is) and what stage. I hate to say this but if it is cancer I hope its Wilms because the survival rate is up to 80-90% in adults. It's been almost 4 years since I went into remission and my doctor said at my last checkup that 5 years seems to be the year that I can say that I am a survivor.
Good luck,
Lisa

My dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 60 yo. I have gone to seminars on kidney cancer and there were some younger people diagnosed in their 30s and early 40s although it is not as common. He went through a lot of rig a maroll to finally get a proper diagnosis. It went from kidney stone to kidney infection to finally kidney cancer diagnosed with ct with contrast. One of his kidneys was completely destroyed, and and the other one had a mass although I am not sure of the size. He underwent a nephrectomy to remove the "destroyed" kidney, and they removed the tumor from the second kidney described as encapsulated (which is a good thing). This was all done laproscopically. Because of the destroyed kidney the cancer did metastasize to his lungs. After two lung surgeries he has been one year with no trace of cancer. He is now 64 years old, still working and going for 6 month followups. Hang in there. If it is kidney cancer, the fact that you are describing it as encapsulated is a good thing. They may be able to remove it before it has a chance to spread.
