What is FEC100? I took FEC for my BC, but what is the 100 after it? I'm going to let Leo answer the question about drinking. My guess is 5 or 6 drinks would be too many a day even if cancer wasn't involved??????

I understand that the 100 referes to the dose of mixture of the 3 chemicals

FEC 100 (fluorouracil 500 mg/m2, epirubicin 100 mg/m2, cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2)

What I am attempting to find out is how alcohol effects this cocktail.

I don't know how alcoholic beverages would affect chemo, but I agree with Nancy that that many drinks every day would not be good for anyone under any circumstances. Give Dr. Leo a day or two to check in and post. Lauri

I agree with Lauri and Nancy.

I would say not to have any alcoholic beverages during chemo. It certainly wouldn't hurt. I even gave up caffeine. I also agree this is way too many drinks per day.

Good luck,

I would agree with the others about no alcohol or limiting alcohol during chemo. I can say that the thought of alcohol and anything much...during chemo just was not appealing. Even now I don't drink only a very ocassional glass of wine simply because alcohol does put you in a slightly higher risk factor for breast cancer...
here is a link, maybe this will help

hello waljo;

My wife is on FEC100 and the oncologist said basically stay away from alcohol. When we took the chemo class, the onc. nurse said the same thing.

It doesn't mean totally. Special occasions, like Christmas, have a glass of wine or beer but no hard liquor. And, "a glass" = "one glass" And, only during the middle off week of chemo. The reason given is that you need your liver and kidneys during chemo to handle the chemo, and don't want alcohol to interfere.

Thank you.
My wife and I were regular drinkers a gin and tonic when we first got homw from work. A shared bottle of wine over dinner and a nightcap of a rum and coke. That was our regime nightly.

Initially she has cut back to maybe a single drink each day but after 6 rounds of FEC100 she is allowing the adys that she has a few drinks to become more common. I simplyneed to know chemo is still working in the background. The fact that a drink in the evening helsps her to relax has definite benefits...

I guess during chemo I would suggest your wife find other ways to relax such as mediation, prayer or quiet music. Lauri

Even if the chemo is effective, the problem is that adding alcohol when the liver is already under assault by chemicals makes other serious liver problems more likely.

Relaxing is important too, but the idea is to get treatment over with, not to prolong it by encouraging other things to go haywire. I don't know how old your wife is, but the older we get the more our innards fall apart.

Hope you have many more years together to enjoy,

A.A.

I'd tell her onco that she's anxious or depressed, which is normal and he can give her something to relax her. It would be alot safer then 5-6 drinks. JMHO

Hello

Sorry I am late. Anything that interferes with liver is off the table. Alcohol is strongly discouraged during ANY illness. Alcohol should be taken very seriously, and anything more than 1-2 drinks a day is sign of trouble.

But even a healthy individual taking 5-6 drinks a day will be facing health problems in a few years. I have seen many many patients with cirrhosis and it is not fun.

best regards,
Leo
