Dear Forum

I see a fairly rosy picture being painted for early detected prostate cancer treatment options, radical prostatectomy, seeds, external beam, etc. I however, also read that 30,000 or so men will die of prostate cancer this year and this number really hasn’t changed that much over the last 5 years. With so much early detection and treatment options, who is doing all this dieing of prostate cancer?

Mostly very smart guys who between cancer or a finger up their butt, choose cancer.

5-year survival rate for prostate cancer is 99%, and it means two things:

1 - It´s a very curable one

2 - Those who die usually go to their doctors when it´s TOO late. They deal with a LOT of disconfort before visiting an urologist.

In my opinion the 99% five year survival rate is due mostly to early detection and not due to treatment. This cancer is, in most cases, very slow growing and most who are diagnosed early would survive the five years anyway with out any treatment. I think the most important statistic should be what happens after five years to those treated.

I do agree with you on the stupid fear factor being connected to the death number which doesn’t seem to change much from year to year. Maybe the fact the number doesn’t change much from year to year is good. At least it’s not increasing whereas the number of detected cases is increasing.
