I am self-employed and fortunately at present covered under my spouse's insurance. At one point I added up the total costs for my Stage 1 treatment for bc (diagnosis, lumpectomy, chemo, rads, and first Rx for tamoxifen... and it was very educational. Adding up the original costs billed to Blue X before the price was discounted (in other words, what it would cost someone who was not insured) brought the total close to $75,000.

For example, when I was deciding whether or not I would do rads, I asked specifically how much it would cost if I were not insured, and the answer was $35,000. I was treated with IMRT. So I do think it is very important not only for the convenience of the women being treated but for the whole system if women can have their treatment done successfully by brachytherapy instead, even if that one week is hospital care, as I would think it would still be cheaper. When I had rads in 2002 I could not understand why I wasn't offered brachytherapy. It was being used for other cancers.

It didn't cost me that $75,000 because I am insured. I don't know what happens for women who deal with all of this and are on medicaid or medicare.
