| My 82 y.o. dad was just diagnosised with squamous cell of the neck which we know is the neck lymph nodes already. Barium Swallow to check the esophagous was done on Friday (priliminary looks good). Monday 4/23 we go in for CT of the neck and lungs. We live in Alaska and plan to make a trip as soon as we know all the places the cancer is to the outside (or lower 48 was we Alaskans call it). Any sucess stories, advice, good Cancer Centers would be helpful.. Thanks Sarah |

AAPA,
The biggest cancer centers in the US and maybe the world are Memorial-Sloan Kettering in NY and MD Anderson in Texas. Other good centers exist - for H&N cancer notables include John Hopkins and the University of Chicago. Consider looking at US News & World report for their list of top cancer centers. Probably any of the top 10-20 will be fine. Good luck. _________________ RLee, MD

A 1-2 week appointment is normal for most centers, and in the big picture will not make a difference. You've gotten this far so continue working toward a treatment plan. Best wishes. _________________ RLee, MD

I am a squamous cell carcinoma survivor ! I had the works, Lymph node biopsy, lymph node removal operation, Bilateral tonsil removal, chimo, radiation, peg in the stomach. I was not a smoker or drinker, SHIT HAPPENS. I am now doing fine !
They never found my primary and that is what worries me a little. Just wondering if he will get a stomach peg? I would have a few important tips on pegs, what to eat and please flush your tube and clean the stomach area very well do not have any doctors look at it and play with it at the attachment location without any latex gloves or have them disinfect their hands. I got this Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection usually found in hospitals, had to take Cipro pills and with Cipro you can't have any sun exposure! DUH!! RADIATION IS WORST THAN ANY SUN EXPOSURE, SO I BURNED LIKE HELL ON MY NECK AREA, HAD NO CHOICE TO BURN AND KEEP RADIATION GOING. THIS WAS MY WORST EXPERIENCE IN MY CANCER TREATMENT !!
PLEASE BE CAREFUL ON YOUR PEG SITE !! My prayers are with you both and please keep me up to date on how you are BOTH doing. You are in this together.
