Hello Everyone from NYC.
I came across this forum just today and decided to join in. I am a 39 year old married father of 3 and a 15 year verteran of the NYPD as a Detective. Back in February 07 I was admitted to the hospital for what doctors beleived to Viral Meningidas. Well after spending a few days in the hospital I was released and felt some what better. About a week later my health turned and I started feeling real crappy again. I returned to my doctor who conducted a 2nd full body medical exam. During the exam he found what appeared to me a lump in my right side of my neck. He referred me out to a local E.N.T. DOctor.
After repeat visits to the ENT, Pathologist, Fine Needle Biopsy, 3x, conferral with 5 different doctors. A bone marrow biopsy and Several CT with Contrast Catscans and finally a Petsan it turns out that I have
been diagonised with NON-Hodkin's Lymphoma of the Lymph Nodes.
The petscan shows that although it has not reached my bone marrow, the cancer has spread to my chest, pelvis, abdomen , lungs and my neck.
This entire ordeal seems like a bad dream that I have yet to awake from. Hearing that I had cancer was and is the most scarest situtions to for someone to be in. and beleive me as a cop in NYC I have seen and heard it all but this really has hit home.
I started asking myself how? How did this happen to me. Why me ? It's been about a month now since everything has been confirmed and I am just waiting on the doctors now to start my kimo theraphy.
As a cop in NY I was also a first responder on 911 and I asked all the doctors involved with my case if this lymphoma cancer could be related to 911. Each one has told me that honestly no one will ever really now.
It's something that Can not truely be answered accurately. So many cops and other first responders are developing all sorts of Cancer and other illnesses since that tragic day. It's really pretty scarely.
During the past week, I had some alone time to reflect back on my life so far and I realized that if I was going to get through this ordeal I had to have not only my family by my side but most importantly I needed God also to help and guide me. I have been away from the church for some time now and this past weekend I awoke on sunday morning and Felt the urgent need to take the family to church and I am glad I did. I honestly felt his presence.
I also recently found out that there are several other members of the NYPD who have similar Non-Hodkin's Lymphoma diagnosis so the thought of this being 911 related seems more of a reality then before.
Any one else in NYC or surrounding areas diagnosis with this form of cancer.? Would really love to talk more on the subject.
Thank You all and god bless |

Michael, when you said where you are from and that you were a first responder on 9/11, I immediately checked what forum you were posting in. if you had posted to the mesothelioma forum, I could have guessed that you inhaled asbestos. However, I am not sure of any connection between 9/11 and Non-Hodkin's Lymphomas. I do not know if enough time has past for any conclusive study on the subject. It often takes many years to come to that type of a conclusion.
In any case, you are dealing with Non-Hodkin's Lymphoma that has spread into various parts of your body. That in itself is a significant issue! Talk about a "bad dream"!!!
Have you contacted the doctors at Sloan Kettering or are you going to another medical facility? I only bring up Sloan Kettering because if anyone in the NYC area is doing any type of studies related to 9/11 it would be them.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Hello JIM. Actually my wife and I have met with two doctors as Sloan Kettering about 2 weeks ago. We waited in the waiting room several hours before getting in to see the doctors and when we finally did get in the first question they asked me beleive it or not was what type of insurance I had and do I have a co pay. I let them exam me but was pretty turned off by their demeanor and really don't want to return to sloan. I trust the doctors at my local hospital on Staten Island.
As to the studies. You are right., there are no 911 studies yet linking this cancer type to 911. However, every doctor I speak with says there honestly is no way of knowing if it is related or not. Only time and studies will eventually deterrmine that.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.[/quote] |

Hi Michael,
I do not have any personal connection with Sloan Kettering... only by reputation. I am sorry you received sub-standard treatment there. However, since there are no major studies to link your cancer with the 9/11 event, any good cancer center can provide you with the treatment you need.
Keep doing your best and learning all you can about Non-Hodkin's Lymphoma. I started keeping a medical journal when I was first diagnosed. I would write in it all of the questions a wanted to ask the doctors. It has become a running joke now. The doctor will ask me: "So, what questions have you written in your journal for me since your last appointment?" _________________ Jim

[Sorry, Officer Michael on your diagnois, doctors have no idea of what causes this disease. All I can say is what everyone said to me. Learn everything you can about Lymphoma, and cancer in general. _________________ DX: Oct 2006
