Hi
I was diagnosed on 13th June with NHL indolent stage 4. Before I was even diagnosed I had spent R25,000.00. on tests etc. This diagnoses changed my life completely, financially and otherwise. The one day I was getting my insurances into order and the next day my whole world fell apart. I was to sign up for medical insurance, just 2 days after I was diagnosed. Now I can happily sign up for medical insurance, but I will have an exclusion period of 12 months. This really sucks. My treatment is costly and I just don't have money for any extras. One thing is for sure I will not give up, I still have 10 months of treatment left, I will just have to see it through. I was forced to take inferior treatment because I do not have the money for the treatment which would have been better for me. So instead of 6 months of chemo I must continue for 12 months, and all because of lack of funds. I told my children to make sure that they have medical aid, as they do not want to end up like me. Having to deal with the cancer and still having to worry about where the money will be coming from to pay for the treatment is stress full to say the least.
Thanks for "listening"
Michele Wink

Michele, you are not alone. I am currently covered under my previous employers COBRA heath insurance but that ends this month. No one will even return my calls! Eventually, I will qualify for my States alternative health insurance but I have to go uninsured for 6 months before they will even accept my application. Then I have to wait another 6 months for it to cover any pre-existing condition. Believe it or not, one of the requirements for this insurance it that the person already has a major illness (like cancer) and cannot get any insurance otherwise :O. Even with the highest deductible (US$5000), I cannot afford it. I feel our pain.
