|

Hi, yesterday I undewent a EUS for biopsy of the head of my pancreas. I had only the Doctor when I was in the procedure room. He was very rude, explained because I was young it must be from drinking. I stated I only drank socailly in my early 20's about two years. I have not had anything to drink not even a drop since 1991. I am 35 years old and lost a sister to drinking.
Then the nurse tried to sedate me but due to my allergy of phenergan, they tried demoral instead. I woke up in the middle of the test and could not breath. They started yelling at me and restrained me down. Then they stopped the procedure. Then they asked if I did drugs because I should have slept through everything.
When I was done, the Doctor stated that He couldn't see anything, except the pancreas looked hardend and did not even get to the area where the tumor is.
He prescribed me creon for the pancreatic enzyme to take. He would like me to come back in 4 weeks because thats when he can do the next procedure and I would have general ansthesia for it.
1. He told me he has only been doing this for 3 months, the nurse said he is the only Doctor doing them in the area right now.
2. Do I put my self through the procedure again, I have read you can not always get to the head for biopsy
3. How do I find someone else to do the procedure if I need one.
4. I can go to UVA a center of excelence but they say need path with results. I have had CTx3 Ultrasounds and blood work!!
5. Still don't know what the tumor is, just waiting since June |

First, let me say that the sedatives used vary quite a bit. The big one used on me (it was a mix as I understand) for the several times they used endoscopes on me is called Versed. It is peculiar in that it apparently does not affect breathing or heart function, makes you not care what they are doing to you, leaves you semi-concious and thus able to cooperate with the doctor, and stops all short term memory so that you simply do not recall what happened. The stuff is strange, but rather effective. Your mileage may vary.
The Creon is a very normal pancreas enzyme. You need to know that there is a generic for it, but you may have ask for them to order it for you. That may save some real money at the pharmacy.
As for the questions, I would say that you may have to look outside your area. In my case, I was sent 75 miles away to Birmingham (the largest city in our state) to go to the big comprehensive cancer center for all of the work. I have been glad I did, because they had experienced people and all of the best tools.
You may need your GP to refer you to the real cancer center in your region. Just go. You will almost certainly last longer if you do.

I totally agree with Marty that you need to get to UVA. Request that your current medical team and hospital forward all of your medical records to UVA for a second opinion and for the next procedure.
Good luck and best wishes to you. _________________ Jim
