|

I would like to request feedback from the Cancer Forums (CF) community members for the following changes to the Addendum to our policies listed on the following thread:
http://cancerforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=6656
The exact wording may change a little, however it will be something like the following:
********
Links posted by members in their posts or in their profiles is a privilege and not a rite. Member will need to be active members in order to use links to other websites. Links to other threads within The Cancer Forums will continue to be allowed. An active member is defined as someone who has met all of the following prerequisites:
1. Have an activated membership of no less than one month
2. Have posted 10 or more substantive messages. Posts made only in order to increase the number of an individual's total posts will not be counted.
Purely personal, cancer related blogs or websites will be exceptions to this policy.
As administrators find members who already have links in their profiles, they will delete the links.
If the current member has posted 5 or more messages, at the administrators’ discretion, administrators may do one of the following:
1. Delete all links found in the member’s profile
2. Move a link listed in the website field of the profile to that individual’s signature block.
Administrators will be free to leave existing links if in the opinion of the administrator deletion of those links would negatively impact the overall content of a thread. This is especially true for posts made prior to September 1, 2007… the day this policy was originally proposed. Members posting messages on or after September 1, 2007 are advised not to post links because of the significant possibility of these links being deleted in anticipation of this policy being approved in some form.
******
We are currently searching for modifications to the existing software that will implement this or similar policy automatically. In the mean time, this or similar policy will be carried out manually.
I thank all of you in advance for your comments and suggestions.
Edited Semptember 9, 2007 to take into account feedback from members. _________________ Jim

I'm not sure on that one. If it was a true blog and not commercial- then what the harm??? _________________ Thinking of you Inica

| The proposal about links looks fine to me. As to blogs, it they are truly personal, I can see no harm. |

One of the reasons I put up my own pancreatic cancer blog on my own site rather than using one setup by someone else is so that I can have full control. So my blog has hundreds of links to both things which are cancer relate and those which are not. I am totally responsible for the contents, pay for my own space, and reap whatever benefits/consequences which come from it.
My thought is that limiting links rather restrictively here is fine, because the site does not belong to the users, does not charge money from the users, and we are here by permission so to speak. The person who pays the bills sets the rules.
Thank you for letting me keep my link to my cancer blog in my signature block. Anyone who is interested can choose to view it, no one has to look, and best of all this site is not responsible for my content. _________________ -------------------------------------------------

OK, the basic policy is that in order to post external link a person needs to be an active member for over one month and have posted ten (10) significant messages (repetitions and frivolous messages will not count). The only excepts will be links to strictly personal blog or personal websites (non commercial). Any attempt to bypass these restrictions (such as using a website in any of the fields on the member's profile or using a website as the username) will result is sanctions by the administrators up to and/or banning the member without warning. This policy is retroactive.
Need to work out the kinks in the language but that is basically what it will say. _________________ Jim

|
|
Hello, fellow Members,
I'm new to the forum and Jim has straightened me out about using links before I was elgible to do so. Should have said trying to use other links to other websites.
Opinions and a poll is there for our opinions, soooooo, here is part of my opinion. I have some reservations about the policies. e.g. If one of our members ask about certain problems they may be having with there treatmeant, medications, or new treatments etc. ... and one of us may have knowledge about a link or website that could possibly give the answers to the question...but are not yet elgible to put in links to our postings...then we are prevented from giving the help or suggestions as to where one might find some answers. When I have a question about PCa, and a new member knows a link where I can find the answer, I think it's a shame for him not to be able to share that link simply because he is new to the forum.
Why couldn't one get permission, by sending the link to the administrator or whomever would have authority over this matter, for there approval. Just an idea and question .
If there is still a poll, I would vote no How do I vote? I see I'm not alone...come to think of it...none of us with Ca are alone.
Best Wishes,
Charlie |

Hi Charlie,
First, thank you for your comment. Only by getting comments like yours will the forum get better.
Second, what you suggest is exactly the approach that some members have taken. They first send me the link requesting authorization to use it. After I review the link and am satisfied that it is not an ad, porn, and is virus free, I have always given them permission to post there link. Often, I follow up with a short message telling everyone that the link received prior-approval.
Sorry that this is not clearly stated in the policy. This reply now becomes part of that policy.
Again, thank you for your help. _________________ Jim

ihatesnow, thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, the link does not qualify as a personal blog or website with your own story about cancer, so I deleted the link.
In the future, I hope we will have a website associated with this forum. One feature that I hope it will have is a page with links to other cancer related sites. Certainly after that becomes available we will welcome your website in our consideration of which websites to link. _________________ Jim

jessica8386, I am sorry that in your first post you opted to violate our policies. Until a policy is officially changed, you should respect this community and follow the policy that it adopted. As you can see by reading this topic, we have changed it as new suggestions are accepted.
I do not think it is unreasonable to ask new members to wait at least one month and post at least 10 significant posts prior to posting links to other sites with the exception of links to truly personal, cancer related blog or websites.
If a member asks a specific question, any member is free to quote information they have or relate to them with their own experiences. _________________ Jim

It is a shame to delete the poster in the liver cance forum who posted information about a new trail for liver cancer. It may be another lifeline for my brother. Important information. Wish the forum could be monitored differently somehow. It is sad to delete a poster who may have useful information that may help or prolong my brothers life. I come to the computer every day in hopes that I will find something to cure him. Every day he wakes, he thanks God and then thinks is this going to be the day that he dies.
May have posted in the wrong place. |
