Hi Reise's Mom, I see it's been a while since you have been to the board, but if you'd like to talk with a long term thyroid cancer survivor, please feel free to drop me a line.
Regards,

I don't have thyroid cancer (that I know of), but they told me that I had a follicular adenoma about two years ago. One surgeon said to take out the thyroid, the other said NO.
One endocronologist said let's wait and see, the other said take it out.
Since then, I have seen two other surgeons. One said we'll take it out, the other said to wait and see.
How does one know whether a nodule or cyst could be potentially dangerous as in cancer? What symptoms did you all have? |

Honeysuckle, how aggravating. it's always good to get second opinions (or more), but when they all conflict so much? My symptoms included palpitations, a seemingly endless cycle of fatigue and resltessness, a throat ache and, ultimately, a lump on my thyroid that was too big to ignore.
Please keep us posted. I hate to say it, but it might be worth it to talk to yet another doctor--at least to break the stalemate.
Regards,

Hi Richard, thank you so much for responding. I've been busy helping my sister who has colon cancer, and had forgotten about my thyroid problem until last night.
I have had a goiter for years and was on Synthroid to suppress it. They also said I was hypothyroid, though my blood work never came back as such. Anyway, in 2005 I started having horrible palpaitations to the point where I couldn't sleep at night. I insisted the doctor run some tests and do an Ultrasound. We always knew I had fluid filled cysts, and nodules but one of them apparently looks "suspicious." They did two biopsies and they sort of came back in the grey area...not cancer, but suspicious. I was told to have the one side removed by a surgeon, yet the Endo. doc said we could watch it. Since then I've been off and on with YES and NO answers.
My neck does pain a bit, but not enough to stop me in my tracks. Sometimes I have a cough, but I can't figure out if it's allergy related because I do spit up stuff at times. The only way to know for sure of course is to have the darn thing removed! But when the last two surgeons said it wasn't necessary (both from different hospitals), that leaves me in a bind with the insurance company.
I've been thinking of looking for a thyroid forum and posting my results to see what other people think.
How are you doing? What steps did they take in your case in the beginning? |

I just recieved radioactive iodine therapy 2 months ago. Here are some tips.
1. Take something to do at the hospital. I was there for two days and I got very bored.
2. Bring lemon drops to suck on. This will prevent your taste buds from being effected by the radiation.
3. Bring gatorade and water. Drinking plenty of fluids will help eliminated the radioactive iodine so you can go home earlier.
That should get you home earlier. The hospital will also give you a list of things you have to do when you go home. Make sure you don't come in contact with people or pets for 8 days. _________________ Kenny M.
