just got a call from my mom. She met with her surgeon today and it seems that she is now categorized as a stage III - the MRI shows the cancer has gone three cm and she is Her2+, although I still don't understand what it means but she mentioned she will have to be put on a special medication(?). She asked if this “positive” is good or bad and the surgeon said it is a positive as it can easily be treated…doesn’t sound like much of an answer.

She is still going with a lumpectomy and honestly it makes me nervous but she’s a grown woman and can make her own decisions. Her surgeon told her that she may need to go in for a second surgery in just days of the first; I guess if she doesn’t get clear margins.

I leave in two days to meet her at the hospital and take her home for recovery. I’m hoping to get better information when I can get in there for myself.

Hi ValT, I have been following your mother's story closely and am glad that she finally has a more specific diagnosis.

Some breast cancer produce a larger than normal amount of a protein commonly called Her2. This means that researcher can find chemotherapies that will attack those cancer cells and leave other cells virtually alone. So, yes, Her2+ is good news.

Surgery is her best option. What about the lumpectomy makes you nervous? The potential of having to do a second surgery? Wondering if she should not have a mastectomy? These and other similar questions can best be answered by her medical team.

I continue to keep your mother in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks brainman...I really appreciate all the help and support I've received on this site. I am planning on talking to her doctors and feel much more prepared. I just want her to be well...

Thanks again.

Valt-

It does sound like some good news (if you can call it that. )

I wish you luck, and maybe keep a note book, full of questions about every thing and anything. (it helps when you are recieving alot of information)

Enjoy the time with your mum- even if it's as a recovery. And also take care of yourself.

Hope you get the results you both are after, and all the answers you need.

thinking of you.... Inica
