My wife has just had an MRI and all clear from radiologist and neurosurgeon, and told not to come back for another 12 months.
The original tumour was a grade 2 oligodendroglioma ( with favourable 1p and 19q chromosome co-deletions).
The current literature states that there is virtually no chance for a surgical cure for any glioma (except the occasional grade 1 paediatric pilocytic astrocytoma).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any surgical resolutions to grade 2 gliomas?
I am not overly confident, as my wife's neurosurgical partner was not overly confident of a complete resection, due to complications of haemorrhage.
It seems the main risk of low grade gliomas is that they inevitably undergo malignant transformation into a higher fatal grade, hence the high 5 year survival, but low 10 year survival.
Any thoughts?
Derek

Hi Derek,
I am very sorry about your wife's diagnosis but glad to hear that her most recent MRI was clear for any cancer.

As you probably know, I am a long-term survivor of a Grade II glioma. Other than the sample taken for the biopsy, I did not have surgery. My treatment of choice was chemotherapy since in my case surgery and radiation carried significant risks. It was just short of 13 years before my cancer recurred. I too was told that I only had a very slim chance of surviving over 10 years. At that time, only 1% of all glioma patients survived more than 10 years. Well, I must be part of the 1% because here I am. I do not see why your wife cannot also be one of the 1% (or whatever percentage it is now).

When it did recur in 2005, it did return in a higher grade. I expect that when it recurs again... and I do think it will recurs within the next 5-10 years... it will return at a still higher grade. I think that is just the nature of this beast.
