Hi, Everybody - First, let me say how glad I am that this forum exists! I hope that someone can identify with what's happening to me and give me some feedback. I'll try to keep this short. I had a mammogram in Feb. '07 - normal. About a month ago I started having spontaneous bloody nipple discharge from my right breast (I am a 40 y.o. married mother of 2). I saw my OB/GYN who checked me over and found no masses, lumps, etc. but was concerned enough to send me for another mammogram and ultrasound. These showed "echogenic material" in my right breast which could be blood, pus, or something else (cancer, perhaps?). I was sent for an MRI on Monday and got the results today. I have "three areas of suspicious enhancements, two in the right breast and one in the left breast. MRI guided biopsy for all of these lesions is suggested." As you can imagine I am scared out of my ever-lovin' mind. There's no history of breast cancer in my family, though both my parents died of lung cancer this year. Has anyone had spontaneous nipple discharge with abnormal scans/MRIs and NOT had it be cancer? I just can't believe this is happening. I know these "suspicious enhancements" can be caused by a number of things - hormones, scar tissue, etc., but I can't help but to worry. The bonus is not only is my right breast affected, but also my left breast. Yeesh. I would appreciate hearing from any of you who may have been/are in the same boat or those of you with any feedback. Thanks for reading, and for your time. Regards, Amy from VA

Hi Amy,

I didn't have nipple discharge, but noticed a lump even though my mammogram was "normal".

I've heard of ladies that have had discharge and from what I understand, it can go either way.

I have no hx of cancer of any kind in my family, and was dx not long after I turned 43.

I'm praying your results will be B9, but if they aren't, we're here. If you'll look at my dx, I had so many things against me, but 5 1/2 years later, I'm doing great and NED (No evidence of disease). There's no doubt, it's scary not knowing.

Having the lumps removed is absolutely the right thing to do. There is not test besides a biposy that can tell if it is or isn't cancer. I had the excisional biopsy, but I've heard of a lot of ladies having the kind you're having.

Keep us posted on the results.

Hello Amy Smile You are correct in that there are other reasons this could be happening but it is critical to rule cancer in or out, I highly recommend that you take your films and get a consult with a breast specialist.

My mom had bloody discharge from her nipple and unfortunately it was cancer but she is here to talk about it 24 years later. Again, to get definitive answers, I would indeed see a breast specialist who will indeed give you a thorough exam, examine your films and definitely do a biopsy to determine what is going on as there is nothing worse than not knowing. Good luck and please keep us posted.
