My husband was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is 55. A radical prostatectomy was recommeded using the devinci. The doctor said due to his high PSA levels that he could send him for a bone scan and an MRI but it probably wouldn't show anything. Would you recommend it being done anyway. His PSA level was 10.04. Gleason 6 low grade slow growing. His biopsy out of 50 samples, 3 came back positive with 5% in each core and it is peripheral?
We have a consult set up next week with the surgeon, should we go for the bone scan and MRI just to be safe to see if it shows anything, or listen to the Urologist that nothing will probably show up?
I have to add that his mother just had her Kidney removed 3 months ago due to cancer and it is hereditary. AND JUST LIKE ANY WIFE I AM WORRIED SICK ABOUT THIS, JUST TRYING TO TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Sanjis:

While the number of cancer positive cores were small and the % of cancer in each core is small, having the further tests may help to put your mind at ease.

Stay positive.

The prostate naturally produces PSA. The larger the prostate is, the more PSA is produced, so prostate size needs to be factored in and "PSA Density" calculated for a PSA reading to have real meaning.

The high PSA reading could be due in part to an enlarged prostate.

Depending on the equipment, MRI readings are often not clear cut.

It is unusual for a Bone Scan to show anything when PSA readings are below 20.

Surgery can be successful only in the desease is confined to the capsule. Therefore, it is important to understand what stage he is in. Some tests are lacking especially when minute amounts have escaped the capsule. That is why MRI etc. very seldom show anything. I have seen examples where Color Flow Doppler, in the hands of a competent technician, can pick up traces of cancer outside the capsule. It is a relatively simple test. You may want to Google it to find where it can be done.
