It's been recommended to me that I get radiation - they think the cancer
is still in the Prostate Bed. It just doesn't stay in one place does it ?
I thought radiation after surgery was only good soon after the surgery.
Need help on this - |

Just a general view:
When it takes a longer period of some years for a rising PSA, that suggests a local recurrence.
You are right in saying it does not necessarily stay in one place, but if indications are that your situation is local, that could well be the case, which is why radiation has been suggested.
On the other hand, if someone has a rising PSA with short doubling time within a year of surgery, it's more indicative that the PC has already moved to distant areas. |

Hi, fenster,
To answer you question about radiation so long after the surgery... The reason for giving radiation soon after surgery is not because the cancer cells are necessarily weaker and more likely to die if they are irradiated. The reason is to kill any cancer cells that might have remained after the surgery. There is no reason why the cancer that has recurred should not respond to radiation.
Did you receive radiation therapy after your surgery? If you did, you might want to ask about receiving more radiation. For some organs, there is a maximum life-time limit to how much radiation doctors will give.
Best wishes. _________________ Jim

Hi Fenster999
I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through. Radiation seems like a reasonable plan. Have you had a second opinion?
My thoughts and prayers are with you. May you have a quick and speedy recovery.

Hi Fenster999
I am just curious , when you had your patology report after your surgery, did it say the cancer was completey confined to the prostate and you had no positive margins? _________________ Biospy 4/2007 - 2/12 <%5 Cancer Gleason 6

chas036, Fenster999 has not replied to any of our posts since August 2007. My hung is that his margins were positive since his medical team was concerned about cancer still being in the Prostate bed. _________________ Jim

Hi ,
Sorry for not responding , it's my first forum. I started radiation 2 weeks ago.
Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. I will have other postings soon describing what my brother is doing with his prostate cancer. Surgery
3 years ago , radiation for 40 days and still has a PSA of .35 which Sloan
Kettering doesn't. He also has bladder cancer and they took his spleen out last year.
Thanks again to all of you - |
