Anyone out there develop liver cancer from Hep B (or C)? Can chemo still be administered with active virus? Is there any other safe treatments out there to prevent metastases without causing liver failure?

Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much....

Hi alottaluv,

I understand my father's liver cancer was the result of Hepatitis B. At the time of his diagnosis, he was seen by both the oncologist and the hepatologist. He had an enormous tumor on the right side of his liver and he was told that there was inflammation in his liver. The hepatologist wasn't sure if the inflammation was the result of the tumor itself or from the active virus. The hepatologist treated the active Hep. B first and then the oncology/liver team dealt with treating the cancer after.

My father was supposed to have chemoembolization initially, but then the treatment team reconsidered for another option. My father never had chemo and once he started on the antiviral, he continued with the treatment until the end. Unfortunately, my father lost his battle with cancer. I learned a lot during my father's illness and the one important thing I take with me is the fact that you can never ask enough questions when it comes to your health and it's extremely important to have a good primary who knows what he/she is doing and can refer to the right specialists. Everything else is research, ask, and find out as much information as you can about your illness. Good luck!

Hi alottaluv,

My dad has developed HCC from his HepC, and chemo HAS been offered to him. I'm not sure yet what this would be exactly as we've not gone down that route, but it certainly hasn't been ruled out.
What they haven't offered though is any treatment for the HepC, but at 75 with inoperable cancer I'm not too surprised.

I'm not sure if any chemo would prevent metastases unless it is being given after surgery to mop up anything that got missed...but again I don't know enough about it to say for sure.

Finger crossed for you!
