Hello,

My 81 yr. old father was just diagnosed with "Gleason 7" cancer cells in his prostate. In addition to difficulty urinating, weak flow etc, he has had what I now deduce are characteristic prostate cancer symptoms which include: low back, upper leg, and pelvic pain & some ankle swelling and weight loss. We cannot get in for a "scan" until after Turkey Day and no results then for another week.

My question is this, do folks with stage 1 or 2 prostate cancer have these pain symptoms or are they necessarily characteristic of cancer that has spread to other areas of the body (ie. bones, etc)???

Given that my father has also had a "AAA" bypass surgery, I suppose his symptoms could be related to that, but given how consistent they are with what I've read about progressed prostate cancer, I am seeking clarity.

Thanks,
Russell Confused

What is PSA reading?
It could be relevant as bone scans do not usually show anything until PSA is at least 20. (see my post under "Gleason 9 Question on stage")

Unfortunately as with most aspects of PC it's a grey area. Men who have early stage PC and BPH do sometimes complain of symptoms, and as you imply, arterial disease and plaque blockage can also produce leg problems.

Diet and lifestyle are important. Recent research suggests pomegranite and pectin can be beneficial for both arterial plaque blockage and prostate. I've found pomegranite helps flow.

Sydney1, I am very sorry about your father's cancer. A Gleason Score of 7 is very common.

Here is a link to the "Gleason 9 Question on stage" topic that John mentioned:

You might also want to look at this article: http://cancerforums.net/viewtopic.php?p=25862 . In it, you will find a link to a very interesting article with a table that balances the different factors that determine a man's prognosis.

Thanks brainman & Johnw.
These are my first inquiry's so I clearly don't know much yet. I do not know at this point what my father's PSA is. I think it was around 5 when they decided to do the biopsy and a "laser prostate reduction".

I'll read your other post and get back with you. Thanks again!
