My Dad just underwent his first round of chemo on Monday (11/12/07) for stage IV non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). He took Taxol and Carboplatin. Yesterday he received an injection of Neulasta. This morning starting at about 3:30 AM he started having foot and later joint pain. The joint pain is still there, but not too bad; however, his feet are killing him. He can hardly walk because of the pain. I checked his feet and there is no swelling, no blisters, or physical changes in his feet of any kind.

We assume it is from the Neulasta. Has anyone else experienced this foot pain? How long should we expect it to last? Can we do anything to help it other than taking pain meds? He is taking 5 mg of Oxycodone every 4 hrs but that only minimizes the pain.

I appreciate any suggestion you may have.

Thanks.

I sine, I am very sorry about your father's cancer and now this health concern. I do not know what could be causing him to hurt so much. Have you talked with anyone on his medical team yet? That is where I would start. Let us know what you find out.

Best wishes.

Hi Sine- I too haven't heard about this before- but i don't know much. Wink

I would check with your specialist, as he shouldn't be in that much pain surely....

Hope things get as better as they can for him- at least comfortable at this time.

Thank you for replying so quickly. I am so new to the whole Cancer diagnosis. Dad was just diagnosed a little over a week ago, and it seems to be moving along at lightning speed. Please stop so I can breathe again and let me catch up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alo Sine

My father feel pain for almost the last 7 months until now, the doctor said it's the side effect of the chemo. The pain reducing 2 or 3 weeks after chemo, it's not gone but at least my father can walk for exercise.
The doctor give the pain killer but sometime I give my father a light massage and he said it held him.

It's hard to watch our love one in pain and we can't do much to make it go away ....

Hi, Sine, I'm so sorry to hear this news.

I am taking the same Chemo's as your father, but for a different Cancer. I will say that my feet hurt as well, but they didn't start hurting the first dose of Chemo or Neulasta. The Neulasta shot gives me some pretty good pains, mainly in the big bones, like my thigh, also my joints and feet.

I don't know if it's all Neulasta or a combo of the Neulasta and the 2 forms of Chemo. I've had 9 rounds of the 2 forms of chemo you mention, along with 9 Neulasta shots, I hate the shots, but I guess you get used to it. I think the bottom of my feet started to hurt a few doses ago and starts a few days after treatment, and lasts a couple days, more at night.

I have Oxycodone but it doesn't really help so much for the pain, but it does make you feel pretty dang good, lol Laughing

Keep us updated with your Dad.

Take care!

Thank you for that response. Dad seems to be doing OK if he takes the Oxycodone as soon as he experiences ANY pain anywhere in his body. Has been having some back, hip, and knee pain today. He is also sleeping more than normal. I forgot to mention he has Narcolepsy, which causes him to sleep much more than the average person, but I think he is sleeping more than usual. That worries me a great deal.

The only positive news so far is that his appetite is pretty good. He isn't eating as much as usual, but still eating what I consider to be a healthy diet of fresh fruits, veggies, whole wheats, and a smattering of low-fat meats.

He isn't drinking as much water as usual though. I wonder if I should be concerned about that???? He does not drink pop or alcohol; just tap water.

I'm just NOT ready to lose my Dad. Mad Sad Shocked

Dad's white blood cell count is still within normal range after 1st round of chemo. I hope that means the Neulasta shot helped and that it was worth all of the bone pain he experienced.

But the BEST NEWS of ALL is that his brain scans showed NO TUMORS. NO BRAIN METS. I am so relieved. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Exclamation Exclamation
