I have been trying to find out information related to exercise and bone cancer. My girlfriend was diagnosed with bone cancer recently, she is 28 years old and a newby in the gym. Our cardio workouts are light and our weight training is moderate. I know exercise promotes all around good health but I am unsure if it could actually be harmful to her bones. I don't want to cause any pain or make matters worse. If anyone has any information on exercise and bone cancer...what type of training to do or not do I would appreciate the info!

Hi Marisa, is this the same friend that has breast cancer? If not, do you know what type of bone cancer it is? Where exactly in her bones is the cancer located? We need this information in order to best advise you. I general, light exercise (walking in a pool for example) is good for anyone with cancer. Weight training just depends on the details of her cancer.

Alot of bone cancers they recommend no weights - due to friction and pressure on the bones- if they are weakend etc. But self resistant (rubberband) weights etc, are ok in certain equipment.

I would see with her specialist to be sure. Like Jim said - is this the partner with breast cancer- which has moved to bones? or another person all together. It's silly but makes a differance.

Hi Marisa, You need to ask her onc. how much she can do in the gym..I had breast cancer two years ago & have been in water aerobic since. My onc. told me I couldn't use any upper weights or the machines for any upper exercise. Also the trainer in the gym told me the same thing. So I stay with the water aerobic which I get the same benefits as the machines, but it doesn't do any damage or strain to my body. So you should also have a talk with the trainer in the gym. Just explain your girlfriends health problem & the trainer will know what is safe for her to do. My prayers are with her.
