Hi! I'm new to this forum. I'm a 26 year old female and I just had a mole removed and found out that it was melanoma. I was very lucky in that it's very thin (0.9 mm) and will be removed next week with a surface excision.

However, I want to do be as proactive as possible. And since I can't live in a plastic bubble - I'm trying to find the best sunscreens out there.

My doctor recommended Neutrogena Ultra Sheer with a 55 or 70 SPF. Has anyone tried that? Any other suggestions?

I'd also like to switch to a face moisterizer with more than just SPF 15. Has anyone tryed the Aveeno stuff that's 30 SPF?

Any suggestions would be great - I'm totally new to this. I've never been a sun worshipper, as I'm very fair skinned. But I'm really wary of the sun now and want to be as careful as humanly possible. Plus, my husband and I are going to Daytona Beach for our one year anniversary in a month - and although I won't be "laying out" - I'll likely be unavoidably in the sun a lot.

ANy other suggestions for ongoing vigilance with this or what to expect in the coming years would be great. Thank you!!

cablekatie, I am very sorry about your Melanoma but glad that it was small. As a man, having a good moisturizer is not a big concern although I understand that for a woman it would be. For me, the higher the SPF the better. I am a fair skinned Yankee with Northern European heritage, so my skin burns easily in the hot sun of the Southeast of the US. I use at least an SPF 40. Maybe someone else with more knowledge about this subject will come and give you better advice.

Good luck.

Good luck, my moms Dr. said anything with atleast spf 40 too, and like brainman I don't know much about moisturizer. He also said stay out of the sun midday. Did the doctor say anything about a sentinal node biopsy during your re excision??

Thanks for the response. Yes, I'll definitely be staying out of the sun as much as possible (I think my husband is building me a plastic bubble...lol). He said it wasn't at all necessary for me to get the lymph node biopsy as my tumor was less than one milllimeter. It's on my back and in a layer of skin that keeps it away from major veins, muscles, etc.

Any further suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
