My father in law had a bone marrow transplant around 1991-92. my husband and I see him using this as an excuse to give up on life....he won't exercise anything except his remote control fingers for watching TV. He claims that he can not do anything....vacuum a rug, walk out to get the mail, walk to the corner and back(it's less than 500 feet), etc. otherwise he's healthy...he can drive to classic car shows and walk around for hours....any advice on how to possibly motivate him to exercise and get himself stronger so that he can live life instead of letting it pass him by...other than his car shows???? _________________ The Gods must have a sense of humor, after all, look at the Platypus.... |

Hi Soveh. I am very sorry about your father-in-law's current health issues. What kind of cancer did he have? It his hard to advise you without knowing the type of cancer he is dealing with.
It does sound like he is at least depressed. Has he talked with a counselor yet or even with his own medical team about what he can and cannot do? It is not unusual for some people (like me) to get depressed after cancer. But I have always fought a mild bipolar war (highs and lows).
You and your father-in-law are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Thank you for the reply brainman, he wasn't my father in law when he had the bone marrow transplant, and he won't really say what kind he had, all I really know is that he had to go to San Antonio, Texas to get it done. He went through the VA Hospital. He has plenty of energy when it comes to something HE wants to do, but not if it is helping my mother in law around the house. He just got over a bout with staph mersa a year ago, but I am scared that if he doesn't get up and do at least a little something, he's going to sit in that recliner of his and just rot....I KNOW that there are easy thingss he can do around the house to help, like vacuum the living room(he's done that several times) that will help him get some exercise and build up his strength. The man used to play for the Oakland Raiders, back when they still got paid per game....he's a big guy, but not fat big. We all love him very much and it hurts to just see him sitting in that recliner all the time. _________________ The Gods must have a sense of humor, after all, look at the Platypus.... |

Multiple Myeloma, He says he didn't have that. My father in law is a big guy. How big some might ask...he used to play for the Oakland Raiders...when they still got paid per game! can anyone even remember those days???? He's about 6' 7" tall. He just started going to physical therapy for his knee...he told the PT that he was very active and that he helped my husband in his automotive shop all the time...the PT didn't believe him and he called my husband to 'verify' Dad's level of physical activity. Mu husband wouldn't lie to the man. _________________ The Gods must have a sense of humor, after all, look at the Platypus.... |
