My friend has been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. It has spread to the spine and bowel and started he Chemotherapy on Monday. He is only 38. 5 weeks ago he walked to hospital with back ache now he is bed ridden. No one seems willing to suggest what time scales we are looking at here. what are his chances, will he ever get to go home, will he walk again?

pollypoppet, I am very sorry about your friend's advanced lung cancer. His prognosis really depends on the specific type of lung cancer he has, where it is located, its size, and how aggressively he gets treated. With aggressive treatment, some lung cancer patients do live for several more years.... it all depends on those other factors.

Your friend is in my thoughts and prayers.

Pollypoppet,
very sorry to hear about your friend, my heart and thoughts are with him. i myself have not long been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer (nsclc stage 4) and has spread to tumour on spine plus mets on hips/pelvis. Started as backache too. Prognosis as brainman says varies and if you can perhaps provide more info than i feel there are lots on here who can provide support and experiences. As i am in the 'earlier' days of treatment of this advanced cancer stage, i would be happy to share my journey if it helps
Take care TW

Polly,

I too am sorry to hear about this diagnosis. One never knows what lies ahead on this journey, but keep hope that the chemo will do it's job and give your friend some more time.

Hugs,
PBJ

Thank you for your kind words all what strength comes through from some very brave people.
I visited my friend yesterday and was so worried before hand but I have to say we had a great afternoon! He says he is a special case because the doctors have confirmed the cancerous lesions in the spine are from lung cancer... but they cannot find the lung cancer! It could be just a few cells. He is on this new unlicensed drug from Japan and if it works it could reduce the spine swelling and he could regain mobility - and go home! I was so excited. He is a real character telling us all the hospital stories he even gets wheeled out for a smoke!! He always was controversial! Still he was in great spirits putting us to shame. lets just hope this chemo works!

ppx,

Same thing happened to my BIL. Diagnosed with metastatic brain mets, eventually went to all the classic lung cancer sites (adrenals/liver), but never anything found in is lungs. They treated it as an undiagnosed primary, but he had the same treatment as a lung cancer patient.

Yup, had to be different!

Glad you spent some fun time with your friend. Laughter is the greatest and you all will need to maintain a great sense of humor.
