I have been told by a number of doctors that having PCa will make us more prone to have blood clots. Have any of you experienced any blood clots since your diagnosis? If so, if you don't mind, what meds or therapy were you on, at the time? Thanks for your reply.

God Bless,

Hello. I'm not aware of any studies stating that PC increases the risk of clots per se, however a radical prostatectomy...or any surgery for that matter...does increase the risk. Is it possible that this was the source of your query?

Like kzimm, I haven't heard of prostate cancer, per se, causing blood clots. But surgery sure can. I saw quite a few come shooting out during urination in the first few weeks after my operation.

In classic surgical/medical school teaching there are several large risk factors for developping blood clots...i.e. thrombotic events.

a. pregnancy
b. immobility/bedrest/surgical recovery
c. cancer

however, c=cancer refers to the systemic effects of cancer and/or the effects that tumors have on the body by secreting strange molecules or hormones.

In the case of prostate cancer, no extra precautions are taken for "localized" treatment, other than the precautions taken in the peri operative setting such as compression boots or prophylactic use of heparin/coumadin.
