Hi all
I am writing on behalf of a friend whose Mother has just been diagnosed (this week) with secondary Lung Cancer (don't know where it came from yet?) & she was told she only has 1mth to live!! How can this be, when she doesn't look sick (although there must have been something wrong for her to do to the Dr in the 1st place)? They said no radiation to give but then said they would give radiation palliatively? What the hell!!!???
Sorry I'm a bit sketchy on facts but have only just heard "2nd hand" & don't have all the details at hand.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated?
Cheers, Angie.

Oh Angie, I am so very sorry about your friend's mother. Let her know that I am thinking about her and praying for her.

Without knowing what type of cancer it is makes it very hard to tell why radiation can be used for palliative care and not for a cure. However, it is not that unusual. My ex father in law had Multiple Myeloma (a bone cancer). Radiation was used in his treatment not to cure the MM but to kill localized growths that were causing him pain or increasing the danger of breaking a bone. It might make the last month of your friend's mother's life a little more pain free.

Hi Angie,

I'm sorry about this news for your friend and her Mother. As Jim said, not knowing the primary source we can't comment much on treatment. The fact that it started somewhere else and has metastasized to her lungs means it is late stage for whatever cancer it is. Palliative care can also be very aggressive. Palliative radiation is for pain control.

Doctor's aren't God. They give time-frames and it makes me crazy.

My husband was diagnosed at Stage IV (the latest stage) NSCLC and you would never have known he was ill up until he became short of breath. This is why certain types of cancer are so bad, they are often full-blown with no symptoms.

I hope you are able to get more information.

Again, I'm sorry.

PBJ
