I have a question. I am turning 51 this year and have had annual PSA checks since age 49 purely for screening. There is no family history of prostate cancer . My dad did have BPH and had a TURP when he was in his 50s. My first PSA 2 years ago was 0.9. My second last year was 0.68 This week I had mine done and it came back 2.78 There is an extenuating circumstance as I did ejaculate 10 hours before the test. I am feeling very concerned about this and have an appointment with a urologist in a couple of days. Embarassed

bucky, I am very sorry about your health concerns. As the doctor said on the other topic, you should have the test repeated with a free PSA done too. But other tests will also be needed in order to give you a full diagnosis.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes, sound advice to repeat the test and include a "free PSA" test next time, as a number of things including inflamation, infection, enlarged prostate can cause elevated readings. Change of lab or lab error can be a factor.

Studies have not indicated that sex or bicycle riding affects PSA readings, which is why most doctors don't subscribe to the theory.

Sometimes an isolated jump is unexplained, so it's more the overall trend that's important.
"free PSA" tests indicate the % of PSA produced by benign causes.
