Hi! I was diagnosed with mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix or Pseudomyxoma Peritonei in 2006. It is a very rare cancer (1 in 1,000,000) Up until I was diagnosed, I was very active, jogging, bicycling, rollerblading, etc.. One day I began to have a pain in my right lower quadrant, and thought I must have overdone the excercising. The pain remained for just over a week before finally going to the doctor. An ultrasound confirmed that my appendix had ruptured. I was admitted to the hospital for an appendectomy. My surgeon came to my room with the news that she had discovered an abnormallity on my appendix and she had sent it to Pathology. She would let me know the results at my post-op appointment. I was told at my post-op appointment that it was cancer of the appendix called PMP Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. She said that since the appendix was so close to the intestines, she would have to remove approx 6 - 8 inches of my intestines. I had to wait 1 month for the surgery so that I could heal from the appendectomy. When I woke up from surgery, I was told by my surgeon that she did a little more surgery than she expected to do. She also removed my uterus, fallopian tube, ovaries, omentum, left and right peritoneum. I was released from the hospital after 2 weeks, but readmited shortly after for intestinal obstruction. Crying or Very sad After being released from the hospital my oncologist sent me to UCLA for opinions on treatment, since he had only treated 1 other person with my diagnosis. The oncologist at UCLA had only treated 1 person with this type of cancer also, turns out he was the one that consulted with my oncologist on that same patient. I came home and began to investigate on the internet and discovered a very helpful website with a list of specialists. One was in San Diego which was closest to me. He recommended 6 months of systemic chemotherapy followed by pet scan, cat scan, second look surgery and possibly heated intraperitoneal chemo therapy. I completed chemo in June 2007 and have had 2 clear scans. I have an appointment on Monday with the oncologist in San Diego to consult about the second look surgery. I am feeling great and have faith that all is well. Thanks for listening! Very Happy
