I will have surgery in one week, having my rectum removed, and colon reattached to anus. A sphincter saving surgery. I have already had a tumor removed, however, no clear margins, so they're going back in, and need to take out surrounding lymph nodes. Please anyone who had info on the post recovery, and how long before I have control over my bowels. I have my own business, 4 kids (and a wife!) and need to know what to expect. Thank you.

Dear Helder,

There are no strict timelines for recovery of sphincter function. It is a slow process, and the best thing is to be prepared to retrain your bowels. There are many exercises that I am sure you will be told about.

I guess I am in the same boat but my doctor hasn't told me about any exersizes, nothing for that matter no diet etc... I am three weeks out and this is driving me crazy.
