I've been smoking daily for about 6 years now. However Idon't smoke cigarettes, I smoke another readily available drug which I'm sure most of you can guess the name of. I consume roughly a cigarettes worth of this daily, from smoking. Earlier today I did this, but something diffrent happened. Afterwards I suddenly felt something in my throat, it felt like something crawling, or itching, something small, and then as Icould feel it working its way up I coughed out blood for the first time ever. A small amount, but it was there. In the past year I have coughed up blackish gunk or resin of some sorts, and flem, but this is the first time I've ever seen blood. I also had a pain in my lung, not very stressful or anything unable to deal with; but it was diffrent, and although just a minor ache, I could feel it was weird.
I'm only 21 years old, and I don't have or know of a doctor I am assigned to. Ihave no idea about themedical field, and I havnt had a checkup in some time now. Does this seem like something very serious? How often does this happen to someone suffering from lung cancer?

I really don't know what to tell you. Coughing up bloody sputum is never considered good, but smoking of the variety you are doing isn't good either, however it hasn't been definitively linked to lung cancer. I'm sure it can cause all kinds of other lung problems though and coughing up blood sure isn't good. (It's how my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer.) You may have bronchial irritation, infection, or pneumonia and I'd quit if I were you. Take the warning signals your body is giving you. As unbelievable as this sounds, people your age can get lung cancer.

Please get it checked out at a doctor -- if you don't have one go to an urgent care facility. It will cost you, but will be more than worth the peace of mind. Do you have any lung cancer in your family? How about COPD?

Check out your insurance options for doctors. At 21, if you have insurance, you should have a primary care doctor for when things come up.

Good luck!

dareza, there are a lot of things that can be causing you to cough up blood... most are really not good things to have. You should go to a doctor for a full examination, tests, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Keep us informed.
