Mom 74 has stage two cancer is having surgery on tuesday 5:00 in the afternoon, doctor says he plans to remove 1/3 of her right lung. can anyone tell me how long this might take, how many days that she could remain in hospital. Trying to make plans for her to come home if all goes well. Thankyou

My mom had a wedge of her right lung removed - she was home in 5 days. The surgery took about 2-3 hours. I'm sure it is different depending on health, etc. My mom's surgeon told her what to expect at her appointment as far as best/worst.

Sorry to hear about your Mom's diagnosis, but glad they are going with the surgery. There are many variables, so one really can't tell how long it will take. A lot has to do with the chest tube they leave in to keep the lung inflated. She can't go home until that is withdrawn and her lungs function correctly.

I think my husband was in for 3-4 days with just a wedge section, but I've seen people struggle with getting and keeping the tube out and spent 10 days. It all depends on how well she does.

I hope for all the best scenarios and that she'll come through this with flying colors.

Best wishes,
PBJ

thankyou. she was taken in at 5:00 and not sure when they started but doctor came out at 9:00 saying it went very well. she has two tubes and was already sitting up, eyes open, talking, says took out entire upper lobe. most likely will not have to go on oxygen because that part of the lung was not being used prior and she was breathing pretty good all this time just a shortness of breath and a cough which has already improved a whole lot. also states that pet scan shows no cancer and lymph nodes looked good will wait for lab results towards end of week, doctor also said should be home this weekend if she continues the way she is out of ICU already today. I asked about chemo and he said its her chose but he did think she will do it and he says thats ok at this time. I thought everyone has it after surgery for either to help or prevent. the spread. He also said that it was most likely stage 2 and that we were very lucky to have caught it as soon as we did. she smoked for 30 years but quit 19 years ago and it still occurred. I wish everyone could find it before it goes to the highter levels of stages. My prayers are with everyone who has had to go through this.

Whew! Good news to hear the surgery is over and she's doing okay so far. I'm sure you are quite relieved to hear the initial news.

If the cancer is staged in one of the I areas, studies have shown doing chemotherapy hasn't shown a clear long-term benefit than going without.

I think once you get to Stage II, then chemo does become a player. This will mop up any cells that may still be floating around so they can't take hold again.

As for quitting smoking, the DNA damage was already done for people who quit years ago. It just takes years to manifest itself into lung cancer -- that is if a variety of factors culminate in that destiny. Remember, many people quit smoking or even continue smoking and never get lung cancer. It's the luck of the draw, and always best to quit, because it does put people at a much greater risk by damaging their DNA.

Please keep us posted once the test results come in and I sincerely hope your Mom breezes through her recovery. It was interesting to hear that her breathing ability isn't going to be any worse than before due to that part of her lung already being compromised. Ya' learn something new every day -- but it makes sense.

Many hugs and hopes for a speedy recovery,
PBJ

That is wonderful news bahenry! It really is amazing how quickly she is getting better. May she continue to improve and go home sooner than expected.

mothers two drainage tubes are being taken out as we speak. She is still having some good pain from the surgery but looks good. She just called and said she might get to come home tomorrow (friday) surgery was on monday 3/31. she is breathing at room air with no problems. Would like to see her eating a little more but she says the pain is a lit bit too much. Is drinking the Ensure I brought her and eating a little but will be happier when she seems to eat a little more. Still waiting for the test to come back on the nodes. Her cough that was so awful has improved so much that just this part she has said the surgery was worth it.

My question is this. If the whole tumor came out with the upper lobe and the nodes come back clear, and pet scan was clean except the lung cancer does this indicate that she should have a longer life span then the 6 months she was given if she did not do anything. This was her paln at first before she met with the doctors.

Sounds like your Mom is doing very well with her recovery. Kudo's to her for drinking the Ensure! That is great news.

Nobody can really tell you how long your mother will live and I think it was wrong for anyone to tell you six months in the first place. A lot will depend on what they find regarding the sub-type and cell differentiation. She may be very early stage and live for years!

Wait until the reports are done and then you can ask the doctor the questions about likelihood of recurrence.

My very best to you and your Mom on her good progress! Thanks for letting us know.

well we got the news we were praying for. She was told by the oncologist on thursday that she is a very lucky woman. It was decided that it was stage 1 level 2, and that she requires no treatment. Doctor told her he will see her again in 3 months to run a series of test again but they feel her cancer has been removed by the surgery alone. It appears from her latest tests of nodes that it has not spread and pet scan howed no hot spots. she is doing great after nearly three weeks after surgery is eating better every day already gained a couple of pounds back and her cough is 98% better and she is very happy about that. we know we were very lucky to catch it so soon.
