Hello all. I am very glad to have found this forum where people can speak freely.

I am a lucky one so far and have just been diagnosed with pre-cancerous lesions on my cervix. I had an abnormal pap smear about 5 years ago but was afraid to go back and have it checked. I finally went back to my doctor last year and had a normal pap smear, so thought all was well. This year however, another abnormal test. I did go back in this time and they did the HPV-DNA test confirming the high-risk HPV. Went back a third time for the colposcopy and biopsy. Just got the results of that this past Tuesday that it is pre-cancer. I spoke with my doctor on Wednesday and he said it is mild and recommended waiting and rechecking in 6 months. Or he said I could come in and have a laser procedure.

Now I'm a little wigged out about leaving precancerous cells sitting there on my cervix. I understand this is a slow growing cancer, and sometimes immune systems can clear it, but I am a 41 year old who is not in the best of health on a good day. I have never eaten well, used to drink about 4 sodas a day (stopped that cold turkey 19 days ago), and I don't exercise. It has also been suggested by my general doctor (not my gyno) that I may have an autoimmune disorder.

Does anyone know if there is a correlation between autoimmune disorders and low immunity? I am wondering if the autoimmune thing has somehow triggered this virus? And if my immune system is already compromised I'm thinking waiting 6 months might not be such a good idea since I probably wouldn't be able to fight these pre-cancerous lesions. If I was a strong healthy 20 year old who ate right and exercised and had a non-stressful job and life I could see how you would want to wait and see. But me? I'm old, and unhealthy and highly stressed. lol

I believe I was infected probably 20 years ago. I've been married for 17 years and have two great kids - 13 and 10. So this was a total unexpected shock. Truthfully I didn't even know what the pap test was checking for...certainly never heard of HPV.

So that's where I'm at. Not quite sure what to do at this point. Wait and see or go have the laser treatment and then wait and see some more. I have an unsupportive family (my mom and sister) - haven't even told my mom yet, but my sister blamed me. That was very hard to take. I wanted her to get her daughters (18 & 16) vaccinated because I knew they weren't going to do it. My 13 yo daughter was in the doctor's office the very next day after my biopsy starting her vaccination.

Would love to hear from anyone else in a similar situation, or anyone else who had what I did and it progressed. I'm just wondering what else to be expecting here on out.

Hi, I'm sorry about your worry and concern with the pre-cancerous cells. It's sad you haven't got the support you need- but maybe you can find that in your aughter, she is at the age where she can be there for app, and such- or just be in the car for travel. Sometimes even a silent understanding is what we need.

It's my opinion, and my alone. I think you should have the laser. It will laser off all the abnormal cells, and gives you a clear margin. It doesn't hurt and is very quick. (most times knocked out). This way you KNOW you have it gone, and can just keep your regular check ups.
By lasering, it will not change anything with you physically, you will not feel anything different after the slight soreness eases.

Anyway thats my 2 bits . Wink


I surpose as one who has gone through and still is... Better safe then sorry. And better to know then wait and stress. Especially if not the fitest and healthyest person. (even those suffer)
