Sasha,

Typically Tarceva is given as second or third line therapy, but have also seen it used as first line in low performance stat patients. Although there are some cancer centers who mix it with other chemo agents, it often is given by itself. Tarceva is a new generation chemo that targets EGFR mutations and has been approved by the FDA for about three years. If a person has the mutation, then it can work for a long period of time to either shrink or hold the cancer stable. It does have side effects, but not usually as bad, for most people, as traditional chemo does. I've seen people remain stable for over two years on Tarceva and watched my own husband's cancer more than double while on it. Without tests for this mutation (you need tumor material), it's a roll of the dice. Then again, a lot of chemo's are a roll of the dice.

Please go to this website to read good information on Tarceva:

http://onctalk.com/2006/11/17/erlotinib-tarceva-in-previously-treated-nsclc/

http://onctalk.com/?p=69

http://onctalk.com/?p=130

Or you can simply go to Onctalk.com and put Tarceva into the search box. This site has the best data on the internet for those with lung cancer and is hosted by an oncologist with a specialty in lung cancer. Please note: The onctalk.com website will soon be expanded and moved to cancerGRACE.org, by Dr. West.

Best of luck again,
PBJ
