my dad just had perineal prostate surgery. It has been two and a half days and his catheter bag is still quite red with blood in his urine. Does anyone know if this is normal and how long its supposed to last?

I didn't have perineal surgery. I did see clots in the bag pretty often and sometimes I'd get a little freaked out. Sometimes a little blood or urine came down and around on the outside of the catheter tube. I called my urologist's office whenever I got worried and described what I saw. I also called the emergency on-call number for my uro one time. I think I woke him up! I was glad I did though, as I was then able to go on with my day without worrying too much.

At any rate, I would call the doctor whenever you see blood and you're not expecting it. I don't know what one should expect after perineal surgery, but if you or your dad is not comfortable with what's coming out, get on the phone.

Best wishes.

The catheter is inserted into patient bladder through his penis to drain urine from the bladder during the recovery. The catheter will likely remain in place for one to two weeks after the operation while the urinary tract heals. That means beside urinary incontinence some problems related to urinary tract are expected, such as blood in urine. Very important for patient is to watch the condition and to report it to urologist if no improvement comes in few days. Please let us know if your dad condition is still the same
