Hello All,

I have been browsing this site for sometime, posted once or twice, and I have to first of all say thanks to all of the people that have posted so much good information here, helping others.

I think I posted before about my mother having a melanoma, actually it was 2 primraries but she told me they were both > 1mm in depth and did not require a SNB. She has recently been having stomach problems and the doctors looked at her with a scope and did a biopsy inside her stomach. I have not been able to find much information about melanoma metastasizing to the GI tract except that the stomach is much more rare then the small intestines (spelling?) and that it carries a very dismal prognosis < 5% 1 year (. Anyway if anyone wouldnt mind my question is. Would a biopsy be a just incase thing, better safe the sorry, or would they be semi hesitant to do it and only do it if they really suspected soemthing?

I have seen many people here post before waiting is horrible... and it is, the last wait to find out the patholigy of the primraries was brutal and drove me nuts This time it is even worse because reality has set in, I have read too much ((( and saw to many numbers. I can just hope that if it is not good news I can be strong for her. She is my closest family member by far and the world would seem like a giant empty sphere if anything hapenned to her.

Her results should be in before the weekend. Hope I can keep busy, tonight is particularly bad because my wife and daughter are in bed and im not tired ((

Bob, I am so sorry about your mother's cancer.

Melanoma does involve the epidural cells that not only line our skin but are also present in our GI tract. While a metastasis to the stomach is on the rare side of the equation, it is not unheard of. The prognosis is poor; but the prognosis of any melanoma that has metastasized is not good.

Here is my take on prognosis which I have very often posted: I do like to know my prognosis but only in order the set the priorities on those things that I still would like to do within whatever time I still have left and whatever physical restriction I face. However, after setting those priorities, I try my best to forget the prognosis and just live one day at a time working on achieving my "bucket list." I can tell you that I am making this sound a lot easier than it really is. But it is the only realistic way any of us can or should live our lives, cancer or no cancer.

You and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers.
