On Monday, I got quite sick with diarrhea suddenly. I've been like this for several days now, although those symptoms are improving. My diarrhea was brownish-colored, with no blood, but definitely colon mucus. As I emptied, it became completely clear except a small amount of mucus. No signs of blood in the diarrhea, but I haven't had a fecal occult blood test. The only time I've seen blood is typically strain at the anus - I've had anal fissures before. This is only in small amounts.
I think a lymph node on my neck swelled for a day or two, as it hurt to turn my neck right.
Two weeks ago, after a particularly bad day of constipation / forceful defecation, I had a panic attack regarding having cancer - in other words, a case of "acute hypochondria". After I calmed down, I started taking fiber pills. This certainly helped with constipation, but also seemed to make the stool irregularly shaped. Come to think of it, it seemed to add mucus as well.
While I was sick this week, I noticed a lump under the skin about 1 inch in diameter on my lower left back, near the left ileum (back blade of pelvis). It's slightly able to move from its location. It hurts somewhat to lie on my left side.
I'm paranoid that it's some kind of cancer, like it's a long growth from a cancerous tumor inside me. The area seems a bit swollen at the moment, but that could be due to me playing with it constantly trying to figure it out. I've been trying to deal with my anxiety without much success.
Two different GPs said that I probably have a viral infection and that the lump is a lipoma. They didn't think that a biopsy was necessary when I asked.
Should I see another general doctor and demand a biopsy, or maybe a specialist like a gastroenterologist? |

Hi mkitty. I am very sorry about your health concerns. I agree with your two doctors; your symptoms do not sound like cancer but a viral infection of some sort. Obviously, no one on the Internet can tell you for sure what is causing your symptoms. Keep working with your medical team in order to resolve the problem. _________________ Jim

| Just wanted to correct something above. I misread a chart. The blade of the pelvis is not called "ileum", sorry. It's the "ilium". "Ileum" is something else. |

It kind of feels like the whole area by the back left side of the pelvis is swelling. That's probably why it hurts if I sit or lie against it for a while.
It's now Friday and the diarrhea has become infrequent but still with mucus. No sign of blood still.
I still feel sick when I eat or drink anything. However, everything stays down and exits mostly normally. Accordingly, I'm not eating much - today so far I've only had a blueberry muffin.
I think there might be another lump a bit down from the other lump. Or maybe they're the same lump, just with different parts shallow enough to be felt externally. This other one is quite different, with a more linear shape, and considerably softer.
I have a gastroenterologist appointment for next Thursday - I hope I can wait without going crazy from anxiety! |
