lung nodules

Hi,
My brother who has never smoked was just informed he has a total of four nodules in his lungs. The doctors have told him they would biopsy the nodules but run the risk of collapsing his lungs. So they told him to come and get another chest xray every couple of months. They want to watch the growth. Isnt there something else more that can be done to find out what these growths are Question

Thanks for posting. Sometimes a PET scan can be used to examine lung nodules and get further information.

[color=darkblue]I have a 5mm non-calcified nodule on my right lower lung. It was diagnosed in September of 2004 by a CT given by the county I work in. I have had the PET and now have had a regular CT last week. I have not heard the results yet. I am 59 years old, not a smoker, and never have been. I presently do have a cyst on my liver which the are not concerned about, have had an ovarian cyst, resulting in a hysterectomy, had a gangalian cyst on my finger, and a hole repaired on my esophagus. All of this within 3 years. The initial report read that if it was a calcified nodule, then only x-rays were needed occasionally, but since it is a non-calcified nodule, then more indepth test are needed because non-calcified nodules lean on the miligant side. I would like to have a needle bioposy, but am told that it could puncher the lung. Can someone shed some light on this subject. It seems that lots of people come up with cyst on their lungs.[/color]

Hello

A lung biopsy is certainly something that should not be taken lightly. But when necessary it really can be done. One has to think about the likelihood of the nodule being malignant or not. The doctors establish this likelihood by examining lots of things: if it is enlarging, how it looks by imaging (CT, PET scan, chest x rays, etc), your risk factors, age etc.

So I would try to get from them what they think about it and if they would indicate it for you. I would think the PET scan is a really good test to tell if it is likely to be malignant or not.

GET THE BIOPSY'S. There are five different kinds of non-small cell lung cancers alone and each has its own treatment protocol depending on its type and stage and THE ONLY WAY TO TELL WHICH YOUR BROTHER HAS IS THE FINE NEEDLE ASPERATION. I've had two fine needle asperations in the past two weeks. A collapsed lung isn't the end of the world. Its easily fixed. Would advise M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Its the best cancer center in the US.
