My husband and I shaved my head last Saturday. Instead of going to his college graduation ceremony (I didn't have the strenght to go) we waited until our boys were out of the house and retired to the bathroom to shave my head. I am fine with this, I would much rather loose my hair than some of the other side effects I could have had.

The boys are fine with my shinny new head, as a matter of fact, they were mad I didn't wait for them to help!

Here's my question: When I told my sister that I shaved my head, she said a friend of hers had breast cancer, and when she started losing her hair she shaved her head also. She said that she was advised that once she shaved her head that it left stubble hairs in the faulicles of her scalp. She said that she was told to use duct tape, stick it to her head and pull out the small hairs. (Ouch!!!!) She said that this would make the hair grow back evenly when it starts to grow back. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

I have several problems with this, First, OUCH!! and second, I can hear my boys arguing over whose turn it is to pull mom's hair out!!!

Let me know what you think - Thanks

I don't have any piece of advice however I had an idea, have you tried asking someone from a hair salon what's the best approach?. That approach they suggested to you sounds painful and kind drastic.

noahsbane7, first I am very sorry about your cancer. Second, why use duct tape? Your hair will probably not grow back during chemotherapy and if it does, you can always shave it again. Third, if you really do want to take out even the small amount of hair left after shaving, why not have your hair waxed off? I know, this might be just a painful as duct tape.

Regards,

Hi - I had my hair shaved off during chemo by my hairdresser. She never suggested such a drastic course of action as using duct tape - makes me wince just to think of it. Sad

Hair stops growing during chemo as it is one of the fastest developing cellular structures in the human body, and the action of the chemo kills off the new cells. Once chemo is finished, the hair will start growing again.

Ignore the advice Shocked

karolynca,

As a fully quallified Hairdresser of many years. This such a load of crap. (couldn't think of a nicer way to say it).
By the duct tape advice, it is waxing your hair. This WILL NOT make the hair grow even. It will just keep the hair at the same level as the chemo stunted hair.

Not only will it cause pain (duh') but also may cause skin removal- as chemo skin is more sensitive and thinner.

Even healthy hair grows at different stages and levels. So no Hair grows at the same length anyway.

Such bad advice. If you are wishing for the hair to grow back as even as possible- keep shaving it till it is a thincker amount. then let grow. Wink Good luck

Hi there Noahsbane7

The head shaving exercise would have been a wonderful experience to share with your SO (significant other). Much better than having it shaved at the Salon! All the best with your upcoming treatment. My prayers & thoughts are with you.

I lost alot of my hair in 2005 from chemo (not cancer related - strangely?). The hair that fell out was on the top of my head & crown it was ghastly, I almost had to have a "fliptop" hair style as it was very thin after treatment, still very thick & long on the sides, condition of hair like straw! It was bad enough to have almost died & then to have my hair looking like CRAP, well that was the PITS (it's a GIRL THING you guys wouldn't understand?)!!! I had (& still have) a wonderful hairdresser who administered loads of TLC during this time & since the hair has grown back. I had the length shortened (alot) at that time, & regular trims & gentle treatments. My hairdresser now is surprised at how thick my hair has grown back & it's now returned & looking better than it has for a very long time.

Inica is the "guru" when it comes to hair, beauty & style & her word is GOSPEL! The strange advice you have been given must be from a MASOCHIST!!

As for Jim's advice re-waxing. It is fairly obvious that he has never had waxing in his entire life to be suggesting something so ludicrous & UTTERLY PAINFUL! Don't you think the fairer sex suffer enough with monthly leg (& other areas?!!) being waxed, without suggesting a full head wax?!!!!! Good on yer Jim!!!

Cheers, Angie.

I certainly wouldn't use duct tape. And I certainly wouldn't wax my head. Waxing is painful.

Whatever stubble is left will fall out.

Head shaving is not one of my things but for people with cancer it's a badge of courage or honor. I would cut my hair short for my mom but I have a couple of ugly scars on my head. I would not look cool bald. Sad

A brave and thoughtful idea though. I think that there is nothing better than when a family member or close one shaves with you.
