I see that lots of you are having questions about neuropathies caused by Oxaliplatin. Since first treatment naturopathic doctor has prescribed me Glutamin powder (by only of USP grade, most pure one), two teaspoon a day IN BETWEEN MEALS (not with a food or before or after it). I had mild neuropathies but they were all gone as soon as I was off Oxaliplatin. I combined it with B-6 sublingual and vitamins and minerals plus omega 3- fatty acids. Please find this as an option to be seriously considered as it HELPED ME very much! Good luck to evryone!

One correction, I was taking Glutamine TWO TEASPOONS TWICE A DAY in between meals! First one would have been two hours before breakfast, second one in between lunch and dinner.

Thanks for sharing, my dad was also prescribed Glutamine and I was wondering what was it for, he of course has secondary liver cancer that we think it originated in the small bowels (Dr still not sure), he got a surgery in which the cut part of his stomach and part of his small bowels, reconnected everything to try to aisle the tumor and he was recently prescribed Glutamin.

Can you get it over the counter? My neuropathy is not getting any better and I have been taking my vitamin B.
I guess I could make an appointment to go see my doctor, but I am tired of doctor's offices. _________________ 10/01/07 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer Tumor and Temporary Colostomy

I am having very bad problems with post chemo neuropathy. It is so much worse now then when I was on chemo. I just went to the grocery store and the air conditioning made it flare up really bad. My oncologist has never mentioned this treatment, just the vitamin b and the neurontin which isn't helping.

How long have you been off chemo?
I don't know if mine is getting any better or if I am just getting used to it. Its been two months since my last chemo treatment. They did say it could take a few months. _________________ 10/01/07 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer Tumor and Temporary Colostomy

I have been finished for 2 months as well. It is just weird as everyone was amazed how I handled the treatment. I seemed to be handling it well. I did have some tingling/soreness while on the pump, especially the third day, but after it would go away. But I didn't really expect to feel worse after treatment.. my oncologist doesn't explain things well anyway.
He acted shocked that I had this happening after chemo and he commented "you didn't seem to complain that much while on the chemo, so I am surprised it is hitting you so hard now".
Well it sounds like I am not the only one. I may have continued to touch cold things when I shouldn't of during chemo and I was exposed to cold weather during chemo so maybe I made myself worse. So if anyone is reading this prior to the same treatment, listen to the Doctor when they say " Try to avoid touching cold things"
I try to ignore it and not to complain, but I live with a sarcastic husband and 2 teenage boys who don't really want to hear about it anymore and I don't blame them |

I went in today to get my port flushed. I was talking to the chemo nurse about my numbness. She said it can last for a year.
Another side effect that has gotten worse was stiffness of my muscles. I usually got that a few hours after my chemo treatment. I did take some potassium last night and that seemed to help. _________________ 10/01/07 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer Tumor and Temporary Colostomy

Hey REB,
How come you still have the port in place?
I guess I thought you would get that out when the chemo stopped -
The thought of having that thing in more than 6 months is freaking me out!!

My doctor said, if we take the port out, I'll probably need it. If we don't I probably won't need it- Murphy's Law
I am not sure if keeping it in for a year is normal. It's better to leave it in and not need it, then to remove it and end up needing it. _________________ 10/01/07 - Removal of Stage III Colon Cancer Tumor and Temporary Colostomy
