I dont know if I've wrote this or not but Dad's right lung has been filling up with cancerous fluid for about a month, he gets drained everyday. a week ago the other lung filled up and had to be drained but that fluid was not cancerous and has dried up this week so they wont have to put a pump in that side, thank god. His cancer count is down to three, but it has went to his brain, so they are only giving him one type of chemo this week, and are starting radiation on his brain monday, they are also injecting a medicine into his lung too on monday. Anyone with some of the same experiences fell free to give me some input.
Love and prayers to all,
Sasha

Hi Sasha,

Good to hear from you with an update. Not the update I was hoping for though -- I'm sorry that it went to his brain. Crying or Very sad They do sound like they are on top of things though.

I think what you are describing is pleural effusion, which is fluid filling the pleural area between the outside of the lung and the chest wall. The lungs sit in a pleural sack. The fact that the second lung filled and stopped re-filling and the fluid wasn't malignant is a good sign. If I'm reading your post correctly, it sounds like they will be doing a pleurodesis procedure on your Dad. That is where some irritant, usually talc, is placed into the pleural area. The irritation causes the sack to adhere to the lung so no more fluid can fill the area, because the area won't exist anymore. They often do this with patients who constantly refill so they don't have to keep draining them. He'll probably be in the hospital for a few days with a chest tube following the procedure. It works in 80+% of cases and stops the effusion. I very much hope for success with your Dad's procedure. This effusion can cause terrible shortness of breath, so it's good to get rid of it.

Good luck and warm thoughts and prayers continue for your Dad and your family. Keep us updated.

Hugs,
PBJ

My husband had it done and he was one of the 80, It is a blessing because afterwards the talc sticks and no more fluid needs draining... Good for you and your dad that he is having it done. Thinking of you both. Good luck and god Bless, Koik

Sasha,

It's a matter of personal choice, but most opt to have it done and they usually are very successful at stopping the fluid build up. My husband chose not to do the pleurodesis and had many thoracentesis procedures done. He wasn't going back into the hospital for love nor money, but he was a hard-head.

All will work out fine. Keep us posted.

Hugs,
PBJ

He seems to be more confused already today, he thinks we have more than one dog and he thinks there are a bunch of hospital bed here. If anything gets better from radiation does there mind come back if it gets bad?

Hi Sasha,

I'm sorry to hear that the brain mets are causing these problems for your Dad. Hopefully the radiation will stop this process and relieve the issues. It's hard to watch this happening to your Dad. Hopefully someone is with him 24/7, but even then it's difficult to monitor him every minute. I pray that he doesn't injure himself.

Many hugs for you,
PBJ

Sasha, I am very sorry about your father's worsening condition. It sounds like he is a danger to himself. I can fully understand how worried you are for his safety.

You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sasha,

Oh my! Glad to hear he is in a controlled environment for the time being. Dehydration and lack of electrolytes can cause all kinds of mental problems. At one time we thought my mother had brain mets because she was so out of it mentally and came to find out that she was severely dehydrated -- while she was in the hospital!

Hopefully this situation will improve with fluids and then the rads.

Hugs,
PBJ
