Is encephalopothy the final stage of this? I know it can be reversed with meds but how long could they keep doing that. Toxins build up and you crap them out but they still build up. Is it gonna be more and more? Until? How often should ammonia and other toxins be checked? Are we supposed to gage it on how they are acting? Please help, Im not good at playing this waiting game. I am so angry at these doctors!!! Just be honest or as accurate as you can. I feel like they will not give me any answers they just want us to wait. And then wait some more.

Fed up with no answers!!!!

Hi Suez.

It really depends on the cause of the encephalopathy. Encephalopathy is a generic term that means a brain abnormality.

Often, with liver cancer, it is liver failure that is the ultimate cause of death. You can gage his condition by looking for changes in:
  • Skin color
  • the color of the whites of his eyes
  • alertness
  • speech

Did the nurse come yet?

Thanks for responding, the nurse did come but could not get blood from his vein. My dad was seen yesterday by a liver specialist. He was told they could not do the radio frequency abalation because he would not make it through. He has diabetes, high blood pressure, cirrhosis, liver cancer and who knows what else. He was given two options chemo embolization or oral chemo sorafenib. He seems so weak to me that I dont know that he will be able to handle that. He has hepatic encelopathy due to his liver failure and his amonia levels going up and with the help of lactulose they go down. My fear is once his amonia level goes up at home he will slip into a coma. I am going to talk to the liver specialist today with my list of questions, I hope he can answer them. I am in a diffrent state than my dad so its hard to know what condition he is in day to day. I am trying to spend as much time with him as I can. His eyes look scared. He is a good man and I just dont want him to suffer. Thanks for listening.
