She has breast cancer. Got it 11 years ago. Had mastectomy etal. Now it's mestasticized to her breastbone. They wanted to give her some IV chemical (don't know the name) drug to stop the bone itself from thinning any more than it already is.

Two days after her first IV, she got an infection in her foot. Size of a football. Is this a common occurrence from such a toxic chemical? Anyone heard of such a thing?

Hi Justine. I am very sorry about your sister's cancer. I wish I had more knowledge and/or experience with breast cancer so that I would give you a better answer. I know that infections in general can happen with IV therapies of any kind but they are not common. Chemotherapy can reduce the body's ability to fight infections. The might have put your sister at a slightly higher risk but still thousand to people get IV Chemotherapy every day and never get an infection.

You and your sister are in my thoughts and prayers.

As brainman stated, the chemo reduces the immunity in the body, which can lead to infections, but the fact that this football sized infection occurred only two days after the infusion tells me that something may have already been going on in that foot, for the infection to get so out of control and grow so fast. I think having the chemo, which lowered the immunity, just gave the bacteria the environment it needed to grow/fester, nonstop. I hope she gets better really soon.
